Recently I contacted Symantec support to ask if they can show me how to distribute content by means other than "Download Java 7" followed by "Download and Log In" from the :9090 portal page.
They said there is no such way.
I have a need where different geographic groups or business units individually manage their specific groups, and the web portal is just too painfully slow over 64-128k intranet. So now I suggest they download and install SEPM console from portal page.
These sites do not have open web access and intranet web distribution is slow at best over our private network. First they have to download and install specific Java package, then download SEPM Java console.
I could distribute entire SEPM folder from source package, but that will install entire manager package, including communications agent (Apache, IIS and ODBC connector), and attempt to connect to DB. Again no good and size is prohibitive over limited network speeds.
My suggestion is to separate SEPM into constituent components separating SEPM console from SEPM communications agent and DB components, so that SEPM console, and Java, can be distributed in an offline fashion. Maybe something similar to exporting managed or unmanaged client packages, where exporting SEPM console for distribution will include specific security certificates to connect back to SEPM communications agent.
As SEPM communications agent and SEPM database have to be in close LAN speed proximity to each other, I don't see a need to separate these components from each other, but someone else might!
